Abstract:
We have been cataloging cDNA libraries to obtain molecular information on citrus fruit development and maturation with the aim of developing molecular breeding. The cDNA libraries from young seeds, fruit pulps at two different stages, and mature-stage albedo have been analyzed. Approximately 50% of clones were identified as the gene homologs registered in the DNA databases. The repertories covered a wide range of functional genes involved in metabolism, growth, signal transduction, transcription, and especially stress response in the mature stages. Random analysis also provided information on transcriptional redundancy of expressed sequence tag (EST) clones and on gene structure, including isoforms with different patterns of expression.
