VALIDATION OF A DYNAMIC GREENHOUSE CLIMATIC MODEL IN PORTUGAL

Abstract:
This study is based on experiments with a tomato spring crop, in a Mediterranean unheated greenhouse, located at Lisbon. The main objective was the validation of a dynamic greenhouse climatic model, developed by Navas (1996), in Spain, as a first step in its use to develop another model. This second model, will combine climate control in a greenhouse and will predict the incidence of Botrytis cinerea, a common fungus of tomato crops grown in greenhouses.

External and internal climatic data were collected during the growing season, as well as information on the evolution of the crop. Three days in different months were chosen to validate the model and simulate the environmental conditions inside the greenhouse, based on the climatic external data, and parameters related with the growing medium, the covering material and the crop.

Comparison of the measured and simulated data shows that the model predicts internal conditions reasonably well. However, as it was expected, some adjustments are still necessary to improve the agreement. The dynamic model developed in Spain will be further used with the conditions of Lisbon, to improve its response.
