Abstract:
Artichoke cv.
Romanesco is vegetatively propagated by offshoots or by micropropagation.
Offshoots are planted in January in order to start harvesting during the spring of the next year.
The practical rate of multiplication is only 3.5 per year.
New methods of multiplication, other than micropropagation which at the moment is expensive for most Sicilian growers, would be advantageous to improve propagation efficiency.
The objective of this experiment was to develop an efficient method of propagation of cv.
Romanesco from underground stem sections.
Stem sections (2 cm in length) carrying developed buds were separated from three different positions (basal, middle and apical) on the stump and thereafter rooted into moist peat.
Two different rooting dates (July 27th and August 11th 1994) were also tested.
By this method, almost 90 % rooting was accomplished and rooted shoots were ready to be transplanted in the field in October 1994. The treatments tested (shoot position on the stump and rooting dates) slightly influenced final yields.
A propagation rate of about 20 rooted shoots per stump was obtained.
By transplanting new plants in October it was possible to start harvesting in the spring of the next year.
