Abstract:
Selection of clove weight is one critical decision that Sicilian garlic growers must face before planting.
Generally higher garlic yields occur with increasing clove weight.
However, a few reports are found on this subject.
The objective of this experiment was, therefore, to verify how cloves of different clove weights might affect garlic final yields and bulb quality.
Bulb production was dependent on clove weight as the highest yields (9.5 and 8.8 t/ha) were obtained with cloves respectively of 6.0 and 5.0 g.
Whereas, only 4.6 t/ha were obtained when cloves of the smallest weight (1.0 g) were used.
Planting cloves of higher weight resulted not only in higher yields but in bulb quality amelioration.
Satisfactory bulb productions were also obtained planting cloves of 3.5 g.
