ISHS Acta Horticulturae 533: VIII International Symposium on Timing Field Production in Vegetable Crops

DETERMINING SUITABLE VARIETIES FOR PROCESSING TOMATO PRODUCTION UNDER TURKEY ECOLOGICAL CONDITIONS

Authors:   N. Saglam, S. Fidan, A. Yazgan
Keywords:   Lycopersicon esculentum, yield, paste, processing tomato
Abstract:
This study was conducted to determine the most productive varieties from sixty different processing tomato varieties, then to more clearly examine seven varieties for their ability to produce high quality crops in a second year. Time of harvest yield (t/ha), paste yield (kg/ha), fruit size (g), brix (%) and pH under Tokat conditions during 1995 –1996 spring growing periods were evaluated. Seeds were sown in a single-layer, low plastic tunnel in both 1995 and 1996. The seedlings were transplanted in the open field. In the first year, significant differences were found for harvest date, yield (t/ha), paste yield (kg/ha), fruit size (g), brix (%) and pH value. The highest yield was obtained from Quinte, 89–8 F1, BSX 052, 91–6 F1, Selef F1. San Marzano, and Hope No:1 varieties (163.30 t/ha, 151.30 t/ha, 143.20 t/ha, 143.50 t/ha, 140.50 t/ha, 135.00 t/ha and 124.50 t/ha, respectively). The highest brix (%) was obtained from Bonnyvee, H.2274, CLX 3704 F1, OL2, CLX 3704 F1, BSX 052 and 93–10 F1 varieties (%7.20, %6.33, %6.17, %6.17, %6.03, %5.93 and %5.67, respectively). In the second year, significant differences were found for fruit size (g) and pH value. Between years, differences were not significant for harvesting date (21–29 July), yield (117.22–123.22 t/ha), paste yield (21975.86–2422.45 kg/ha), fruit size (55.30–65.15 g), brix (%) (%5.34–%5.50) and pH 4.16–4.12 value. Three times higher yield was obtained in comparison to the traditional cultivation during both 1995 and 1996 years.
