WATER SUPPLY AND SOIL MULCHING WITH LEEKS

Authors:   F. Benoit, N. Ceustermans, J.H. Bae
Keywords:   leeks, irrigation, mulch
Abstract:
As far as irrigation is concerned, research over several years has shown that during the first 2 months after being set out in the plantholes leeks need 320 1 per sq. m water or about 80% of their total need of water. By trickle irrigation the humidity deficit is preferably compensated weekly. Soil mulching, especially with white plastic, causes the stem diameter and hence the weight and the quality to increase significantly. These advantages persist, even after a cold winter spell of -10°C.
