OPTIMUM PLANTING DENSITY FOR EGGPLANT CV. 'AVAN'

Author:   P. Benedictos Jr
Keywords:   Solanum melongena L., plant population, plant spacing, yield
Abstract:
Eggplant is an important vegetable crop in Iran with a cultivated area of around 40,000 ha. This is a warm-loving crop and is planted in summer in most parts of Iran and in winter in the southern parts of Iran. There are many local and foreign cultivars grown and previous studies have evaluated these cultivars and from among these, cultivar Avan was selected due to its high yield. This study was conducted to determine the best planting density on yield of cv. Avan under Karaj conditions. Planting distance of 75 cm, 100 cm and 125 cm between rows as the main plot and distances of 40 cm, 50 cm and 60 cm within the row as the subplot were tried on a split-plot design for a period of two years from 1995–96. For the main plot the optimum planting distance between rows is 75 cm, while for the sub-plot, the 40-cm row gave the best result. For interaction effect, the highest yield was obtained with the spacing of 75 × 40 cm.
