ISHS Acta Horticulturae 533: VIII International Symposium on Timing Field Production in Vegetable Crops

EFFECTS OF SOWING/PLANTING DATES ON SEED YIELD AND QUALITY OF LETTUCE IN GAP AREA

Authors:   K. Abak, N. Sari, H. Yildiz Dasgan
Keywords:   Lactuca sativa, autumn, spring sowings
Abstract:
In a recently irrigated agricultural area of Turkey, the effects of different sowing times on seed yield and quality of lettuce were studied. In two years experiments the effects of six different sowing/transplanting times, four in autumn and two in spring season, by 15 days intervals, on bolting and seed harvest dates, seed yield and quality (1000 grain weight, hectolitre weight, germination period and ratio, emergence period and ratio) were investigated. Statistically significant differences on harvesting dates and seed yields were not observed within autumn sowing times. The seeds of the different sowing times, were harvested at the same time and differences in the yield were not statistically significant, the two years average yield being between 349 and 400 kg/ha. Spring yields obtained, however, were lower than the autumn ones, being 128 and 143 kg/ha for the first and second spring sowings/plantings, respectively of the first experimental year. With respect to quality characteristics, significant differences were not observed.
