ISHS Acta Horticulturae 532: International Symposium on Chemical and Non-Chemical Soil and Substrate Disinfectation

USE OF BIOCONTROL AGENTS AGAINST SOIL-BORNE PATHOGENS: RESULTS AND LIMITATIONS

Authors:   G. Vannacci, M. Gullino
Keywords:   biological control, soilborne pathogens, non-pathogenic Fusarium spp., Trichoderma spp.
Abstract:
A number of technical, economical and environmental factors stimulate the use of biocontrol agents for the control of soilborne pathogens. Despite decades of research in the field of biological control, only a few microorganisms are on the market and are successfully applied in practice. Some success cases, such as non-pathogenic Fusarium spp. and Trichoderma spp. are reported and critically discussed. The possibility of combining biocontrol agents with a number of other control measures (chemicals, resistant varieties, physical methods,…) is emphasized. The opportunity of biocontrol in greenhouse crops and, particularly, in soilless systems is stressed. The main reasons for the delay in broad use of biological control are discussed.
