ISHS Acta Horticulturae 532: International Symposium on Chemical and Non-Chemical Soil and Substrate Disinfectation

BIOFUMIGATION, FIRST RESULTS ON LETTUCE IN PROTECTED CULTURE

Authors:   F. Villeneuve, B. Lepaumier
Keywords:   biofumigation, lettuce, protected culture, soilborne diseases
Abstract:
The consideration of respect for the environment and the withdrawal of authorisation for the use of methyl bromide oblige producers to find new methods of controlling plant health problems arising from the soil. Biofumigation is among the possible alternatives.

This method is based on the modification of the soil atmosphere and the presence of some biochemical compounds specific to certain plants (glucosinolates in Brassicacea). The first results show a delay in the appearance of the problems of basal rot in lettuce as well as an improvement of the quality of the product at harvest.

The recorded effect can be continued into the second year. Various parameters can intervene such as the quantity of fresh matter ploughed in and the type of mulching.
