Abstract:
Soil disinfestation is one of the most important methods to control soil-borne diseases and root knot nematodes for intensive greenhouse cropping.
Ten years ago, 90% of total greenhouse areas, used for vegetable production were fumigated with methyl bromide.
Most people were very satisfied because it has phytotechnical as well as an economical basis.
A short waiting period is combined with a very good penetration and spread of the compound resulting generally very good pest control.
Pesticides with restricted activity like products based on dichloropropene are increasingly applied in open field crops, especially against nematodes in tobacco and some ornamentals.
In recent time there is an increased interest in the development of integrated plant protection programs, especially those including alternative soil and plant protection methods as: resistant varieties of different crops, special crop rotations, intercropping of some plants, soil solarisation, biological control, plant extracts of certain medical and ornamental plants, different kind of organic manure (poultry, cattle, pigeon and sheep) and tillage.
Using alternative crop protection methods is at present the chance for our farmers in Bulgaria.
