ISHS Acta Horticulturae 532: International Symposium on Chemical and Non-Chemical Soil and Substrate Disinfectation

CONTROL OF SOIL-BORNE PATHOGENS AND WEEDS IN LEAF SALAD MONOCULTURE BY USE OF A SELF-PROPELLED SOIL-STEAMING MACHINE

Authors:   M.P.C. Pinel, W. Bond, J.G. White
Keywords:   Salad crops, raised beds, methyl bromide replacement, non-selective kill
Abstract:
On three sites the machine raised temperatures to 100°C in the top 10 cm, with temperature increase reducing with increasing depth. With one exception five soil-borne pathogens and native Pythium species were killed to a depth of 10 cm. On light soil the effective kill depth increased to 15 cm. At some sites weed control reached 95–98 % on bed surfaces and the majority of weeds recorded after treatment were wind-blown species.
