Keywords:   vegetative growth, yield
Abstract:
The present investigation was carried out during two successive seasons 1995/1996 and 1996/1997 on Williams banana cv. Grown on Minia Governorate Egypt to study the effect of the number of suckers per hill on vegetative growth characteristics and productivity. Results indicated that pseudostem height and girth, number of leaves per plant and the leaf length and area were decreased as the number of suckers per hill (3–6) increased. At the same time, increasing the number of suckers per hill prolonged the period of vegetative cycle and the period from flowering to maturity. Bunch weight, number of hands per bunch, number of fingers per hand as well as hand and finger weight were maximised by leaving three suckers per hill. Increasing the number of suckers per hill had an adverse effect on fruit quality in terms of decreasing total soluble solids, total reducing sugar and sucrose. Meanwhile, it increased the starch and total acidity in the pulp.
