ISHS Acta Horticulturae 531: II ISHS Conference on Fruit Production in the Tropics and Subtropics

PRODUCTION OF TROPICAL FRUITS IN EUROPE: A GEOGRAPHICAL SURVEY

Abstract:
Growing consumer awareness and demand of tropical fruits in Europe offer interesting perspectives for expanding fruit production in many tropical countries directed to increasingly diversified import markets. Due to climatic limits, Europe always will depend on imports for most of these fruits, with some exceptions. In those areas with the most favourite climate, at the Mediterranean coast and on some Atlantic islands, different tropical fruit species were introduced, and some of them successfully expanded their local production. These fruit crops are concentrated in limited areas, and their evolution differs considerably in space and time. This paper presents an analysis of the diffusion of the tropical fruit species introduced in European agriculture and gives a geographical survey of their main problems and perspectives. Regressive processes are confronted with examples of dynamic expansion. In spite of their spatial limitation, some tropical fruit crops already exceed local demand and compete on European markets that are dominated by a highly dynamic evolution of fruit imports from tropical countries.
