Abstract:
Antibiotics have been used widely in plant tissue culture for more than four decades and it is only relatively recently that attention has been paid to careful selection of agents that are harmless to the plant tissue, and effective against the troublesome bacteria.
It is good practice to identify which organisms are harmful and which may be beneficial to the plant and restrict the antimicrobial agents to those suitable for the treatment of the former.
The spread of antibiotic resistance to organisms, whether harmful to humans or otherwise, which reach the food chain, may be shown to aggravate the problem of selection of antibiotics for human use.
