ISHS Acta Horticulturae 53: IV Africa Symposium on Horticultural Crops

FASCIATION STUDIES ON SMOOTH CAYENNE PINEAPPLE, ANANAS COMOSUS L. (MERR)

Authors:   J.C. Norman, O.K. Owusu-Aduomi
Abstract:
A greater percentage of fasciated fruits of smooth Cayenne pineapples was produced by control plants than by calcium-carbide-treated plants, indicating that chemical forcing reduces the incidence of fasciation.

Caging of the plants did not have any significant effect on fasciation, demonstrating that insects do not play any appreciable role.

Type of planting material used also had no influence on fasciation, which may therefore not be genetically transmittable.
