ISHS Acta Horticulturae 53: IV Africa Symposium on Horticultural Crops

FIELD SYMPTOMS OF EXOCORTIS VIRUS DISEASE OF CITRUS ON SHAMOUTI SWEET ORANGE

Author:   O.K. Atubra
Abstract:
Nine-year-old Shamouti Sweet Orange budded on Rough Lemon rootstock in the citrus museum of the Department of Horticulture, U.S.T., developed longitudinal splits on trunks and large branches. As the trunks increased in girth the splits widened and appeared as patches.

The cambial surface became green and there was a prominent bulge at the bud union. Gum exudation appeared on some of the trunks and most of the leaves were greatly reduced in size.

Indexing on Etrog citron, Arizona 861 revealed severe exocortis virus symptoms. No previous report of this disease on Shamouti Sweet Orange has been found.
