YIELD AND TREE GIRTH VARIABILITY IN SOME COLA NITIDA POPULATIONS

Authors:   E.E.N.A. Bonaparte, K. Osei-Bonsu, M.K. Afrifa
Abstract:
The yields of Cola nitida trees in plot BXI, Tafo, planted in 1967 are reported. In 272 trees of Oyoko White, 52% fruited in 1973–'74 and 39% during 1974–'75. In 262 trees of Oyoko Red, 38% fruited during 1973–'74 and 33% in 1974–'75.

Yield was very variable in both populations, and low yielders predominated. In Oyoko White, 20% of the bearing trees produced 39% of the total yield and in Oyoko Red, 20% of the bearing trees produced 41% of the yield.

The individually recorded trees of three populations in Cola Plot 1, Bunso, planted in 1968, also showed great variability. 29, 45 and 37% of the trees fruited in 1973–'74 in Bunso White, Kumasi White and Kade Red, respectively. Much variability in tree girth occurred.
