ISHS Acta Horticulturae 53: IV Africa Symposium on Horticultural Crops

THE EFFECT OF OKRA STALK SUPPORT ON YIELD AND YIELD COMPONENTS OF TWO VARIETIES OF COWPEA

Authors:   G.F. Wilson, P.N. Mehta
Abstract:
Okra stalk left standing in the field provided a suitable support for climbing cowpeas and produced significant yield increases of 58 and 32%. Pods per plant, pod length and seed weight were favourably affected by support. The use of okra stalk as support for climbing vegetables in small market gardens is suggested.
