ISHS Acta Horticulturae 53: IV Africa Symposium on Horticultural Crops

ONION GROWING IN SURINAM

Author:   G. Balkema
Abstract:
Onion (Allium cepa) is a new vegetable crop in Surinam. It has previously been imported but with the availability of short day cultivars it is now possible to produce onions locally.

Research has been done mainly to find the best cultivars and the best cultural practices to attain the production which gives the highest net returns for the invested labour and capital.

Cultivar Red Creole gives a relatively low yield but is vigorous and has a good keeping quality. Texas Early Grano and Excel give higher yields but do not keep well.

Research on cultural practices includes variations on the traditional method such as open seedbeds and herbicide treatment, as well as trials with field sowing and onion sets.
