VARIABILITY IN PHOTOPERIODIC RESPONSE IN OKRA (HIBISCUS ESCULENTUS L.)

Abstract:
Cultivars of okra grown outdoors at different times of the year in Nsukka, Nigeria, could be divided into two groups, depending on their response to photoperiod.

"dry season" or short day group (critical day length of 12 ¼ hrs or less)
"all season" or neutral group (critical day length of 12 ½ hrs or more)

A study of the cultivars under controlled environments in Newcastle upon Tyne, England, showed variability in growth and flowering time within "all season" cultivars exposed to day length/temperature interaction.
