Abstract:
A number of pre-emergence herbicides were tested in different combinations and concentrations in a pineapple planting.
It was shown that the combination of Thiazopyr ("Visor") at 1.5 kg/ha and Atrazine ("Gesaprim") at 6.0 kg/ha gave the best overall result, due to minimal affect on plant growth.
The lack of phytotoxicity was reflected in larger fruit diameter, fruit length and fruit mass and in the length of the D-leaf, when compared to the standard Bromacil/Atrazine/Diuron combination and also the control (no herbicidal treatment). It was found that 25% of the fruit was harvested four weeks earlier and a further 32.9% three weeks earlier than the control.
The lack of phytotoxicity and good weed control in combination with Atrazine and Diuron, particularly in fresh, green planting material, is a huge benefit to the local pineapple industry.
