Abstract:
Molybdenum is a component of nitrate reductase enzyme, which is known to play an important role in plant nitrate metabolism.
Plants that are molybdenum deficient could have nitrate accumulated in their tissues.
In the first experiment, the relationships between nitrate and molybdenum in parts of field grown pineapple plants were investigated.
The experimental design was a randomized complete block (RCB) with 5 treatments i.e.
O, 0.25, 1.25, 2.5 and 5.0 mg Mo plant-1. The second experiment determined the effect of soil pH on molybdenum adsorption by the soil.
The experiment was an RCB with 2 replicates.
The pH-adjusted soil was incubated with molybdenum for ten days.
Nitrate content in crown and juice correlated with molybdenum in D-leaf of pineapple plants.
Crown nitrate increased linearly with molybdenum content in the leaf (r2 = 0.7) whereas juice nitrate decreased quadratically with the molybdenum content (r2 = 0.6). Molybdenum adsorption by the soil increased with the decreasing soil pH. The nitrate residue found in the fruit may have been due to molybdenum deficiency.
Molybdenum adsorption occurring with the decreasing of soil pH due to nitrification may have caused the deficiency in plants.
