Abstract:
In order to estimate the possible nitrogen (N) input by N2 fixation in field-grown pineapples in Thailand, natural 15N abundance ( 15N) in the leaves of pineapples was compared to that of neighbouring presumed non-N2-fixing plant.
Of the total 40 pineapple samples from 36 sites, 15N values of 33 samples were clearly lower than those of neighbouring plants.
Average contribution of N2 fixation to total plant N of these 33 pineapple samples was estimated to be 52% and the average estimate for all pineapples was 43%.
