Abstract:
The pineapple industry has experienced a dramatic change in the past 40 years.
From 1956 to 1976, the fruits were mainly canned for export with the production peak around 1971. The contemporary industry has shifted to domestic fresh markets.
In compliance with this change, the pineapple variety for production has been adjusted from almost all Cayenne to only 75% today, whereby new varieties destined for fresh consumption has risen to 25% of the market share.
The industry continues to face international competition of production cost, environmental regulation as well as market competition from other fruit crops after joining WTO. This paper addresses the change of pineapple production and industry in Taiwan for the past 40 years.
It also outlines several production strategies to meet the future challenge.
