EVALUATION OF GRAPEVINE CULTIVARS AND BREEDING LINES FOR ADAPTABILITY TO MISSOURI CONDITIONS |

| Abstract:
There are 138 wine grape and 19 table grape cultivars and advanced breeding selections under evaluation for their adaptability and productivity under the unique growing conditions and vineyard management practices commonly found in Missouri, U.S.A. Vines are trained to a bi-lateral high cordon system at 2.5 m x 3 m (8' x 10') spacing and evaluated for cold hardiness, survival, disease susceptibility, vine growth, yield, fruit chemistry, and wine quality. The viticultural and enological performance of these cultivars and breeding selections has been reported annually since 1991. There are 25 wine grape cultivars under establishment evaluation. Among the 113 wine grape and 19 table grape cultivars and breeding selections under post-establishment evaluation, 27 wine and 8 table grape cultivars or breeding selections showed no undesirable characteristics and will be further evaluated. The remaining cultivars and breeding selections were eliminated from the experimental vineyard due to significant undesirable characteristics such as virus infection, difficult establishment, lack of cold hardiness, and poor wine quality. Cultivars and breeding selections with sufficient cold hardiness, disease resistance, yield, fruit chemistry, and wine quality will be identified and introduced to the Missouri Grape and Wine Industry at the conclusion of this study. | |
