Abstract:
The breeding of frost resistant varieties tolerant to fungal diseases started more than 40 years ago at the Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding of the University of Horticulture and Food Industry using the V. amurensis species as source of resistance.
Our first successful variety, Kunleàny, was approved by the state in 1975 and today it is produced in nearly 2000 ha in the wine-growing regions of the Great Hungarian Plain.
At present our 4 white wine grape (Amadeus, Odysseus, Orpheus, and Taurus) two red wine grape (Korai bibor, Pannon frankos) two white table grape (N 127, N 200 and two blue table grape(N 53, N 128) variety candidates wait state approval.
The frost resistance of wine grape variety candidates exceeds even that of the Kunleàny variety.
The frost resistance of the table grape variety candidates is identical with that of the less sensitive table grape varieties but their security of crop production is much more favourable because of their excellent ability of fruit regeneration.
Due to the tolerance of variety candidates towards downy mildew and powdery mildew two or three sprayings a year are enough to prevent the damages caused by these pathogens.
Through their colours, ripening time and differences in character they represent a wide selection of varieties.
