Abstract:
In this study microsatellite (SSR) markers were used to characterize the different grapevine cultivars admitted and recommended for the production of the regional wines in the Azores. 12 SSR loci were employed to genotype the main cultivars (Arinto, Verdelho branco, Verdelho roxo, Terrantêz and Saborinho) used for the production of VQPRD (Quality Wine Produced in Specified Region) and VLQPRD (Liquor Wine Produced in a Denominated Region) in the Azores and a local rootstock (RL). Furthermore, Ramisco (a cultivar from the Portuguese mainland used for the production of a typical wine in Colares), a third Verdelho used in Madeira, that might have been originally introduced for the production of Verdelho in the Azorean islands, and Boal, also from Madeira, were included.
In our analyses all the plants showed unique genetic profiles with the exception to the Verdelhos that showed the same genotype.
