Abstract:
The Malvasia family is a group of grapevine variety of ancient Greek origin with a characteristic aroma conferred by the volatile monoterpenes, mostly geraniol.
The "Malvasia rosa" was isolated in 1967 from a bud mutation that was found on a vine of "Malvasia di Candia aromatica", typical grapevine variety of the Piacenza province.
The new grapevine variety has similar characteristics like the parents regarding phenology, plant growth habitus and bud fertility.
Its bunch is smaller than that one of original Malvasia, quite loose and with pyramidal shape; the berry is roundish, of medium size, with an intense pink colour.
The juicy and not coloured flesh shows steadily high sugar concentration (21°Brix) and low total acidity (5,2 g/L). The wine from "Malvasia rosa" variety has an agreeable pink colour and a characteristic aroma.
