Abstract:
In order to complete research done rather separately on canopy shape and vigour, this work studies the interactions between those 2 elements, and particularly analyzes their consequences on potential exposed leaf area (SFEp) and architectural characteristics. That research gives the opportunity to precise the ecophysiological meaning of SFEp and to build up a methodology for canopy architecture. Among the results it is interesting to point out the influence:
  • of shoot vigour: rather positive on SFEp till moderate vigour levels, positive on foliage height, and also on leaf area density (LAD) particularly on the first basal third of the foliage which corresponds to the zone of frequent occurrence of laterals; notice that low vigour encourages random orientation of leaves versus the normal one which is given by the trellis or the row orientation;
  • of downward shoot bearing: few influent on SFEp, negative on foliage height and main shoot vigour, and positive on lateral vigour and LAD in the most frequent zone of lateral occurrence, near fruits, around the bending part of the shoots.
