ISHS Acta Horticulturae 526: V International Symposium on Grapevine Physiology

RECENT DEVELOPMENTS IN GRAPEVINE CANOPY MANAGEMENT

Author:   A. Carbonneau
Keywords:   economy, mechanization, planting density, pruning, summer operations, training system, wine quality
Abstract:
Study on canopy management is always a refreshing support for analysing the adaptation of the grapevine to the micro-environment, and dealing with microclimate or source-sink relationships. A general survey of those aspects will be presented, pointing out the interest of physiological modelling and the concept of biological triptych (Carbonneau, 1996).

One of the main interests of canopy management study is to propose new technologies in order to progress on the way of sustainable viticulture, wine quality and type, economics. A general presentation of the main categories of training systems will be done; then a particular focus on new formula (single curtain, lyre, lys, …) will be developped, while making an attempt of a worldwide synthesis on such trend; finally a summary of the activity of the GESCO (Groupe Européen d'étude des Systèmes de COnduite de la vigne) will be exposed.
