Abstract:
The potential of attractant-aided dissemination of pathogens in field populations of insect pests is examined. The codling moth males are attracted into codlemone baited pheromone stations (modified pheromone traps) coated inside with Cydia pomonella granulosis virus (CpGV). A special pheromone station (CpGv-pheromone station) suitable for contamination of the attracted males was developed and used in field trials.

The field trials with CpGV-pheromone stations started in 1995. In 1997, the stations were exposed on 16 plots at 8 different locations and 4 small apple orchards. Changes of the codling moth abundance were monitored using pheromone sticky traps, cardboard strips and by examining the fruit damage.

Transfer of the viral infection from CpGV-pheromone stations by attracted males to females and to caterpillars was documented. Preliminary results with contamination suggest that both population density and fruit damage are decreased, compared to control plots. Since 1997, the field trials with direct spray of CpGV and with combinations of direct spray and pheromone stations were studied and the results are presented.
