USEFULNESS OF 18 FLOWERING CRAN APPLES AS POLLINIZERS FOR MACINTOSH

Authors:   S. Khanizadeh, F. Saad, Y. Groleau, R. Granger
Abstract:
Macintosh is still one of the predominant cultivar in Quebec Orchard. Improvement of the pollination, CA storage, cultural practices, etc, is presently under further experimentation to improve the quality and quantity before and after storage. One of the issues is to obtain the maximum fruit set using the best pollinazer. Macintosh trees were hand-pollinated with pollen collected from 18 crab apples and 'Liberty', scab resistant cultivars. Each source of pollen was evaluated before use for viability. Three trees of Macintosh were used for each pollen source. Three hundred blossoms on a single branch were pollinated on each tree and a comparable branch on the same tree was tagged as an indicator of fruit set under natural condition. Fruit were counted at maturity on the hand pollinated and natural pollinated branches. Pollen from 'Carmine', 'Dolgo', 'Eleyi Neville Copeman', 'Hopa', 'Liberty', 'Makamik, 'Pioneer scarlet', 'Radiant' and 'Sun Dog' significantly increased the fruit set compared to the other crab apples used as pollinazer compared to naturally pollinated branch. No significant difference was observed between red or white flowering crab apples.
