BACTERIAL CANKER OF STONE FRUIT TREES: PREDISPOSITION OF THE TREES TO THE DISEASE IS AFFECTED BY SOIL CONDITIONS AND PRUNING THROUGH ALTERATION OF THE WINTER STEM WATER CONTENT

Authors:   A. Vigouroux, C. Bussi, T. Girard
Keywords:   Pseudomonas, Prunus, Environmental conditions, Water-soaking, Soil texture
Abstract:
After frequent observations that orchards grown in coarse-textured soils were esspecially affected by bacterial canker, it was pointed out that stem water content of the trees in winter was systematically higher than that of trees grown in fine soils. In a similar way, pruning which is often associated with damage from bacterial canker, was shown to increase the water content of the stems remaining on the trees in winter. Given that it was previously shown that higher winter water content increases susceptibility of the trees to bacterial canker, it is concluded that soil conditions or pruning can predispose the trees to the disease through the alteration of winter water content that they induce.
