Abstract:
In the western part of Latvia the winter hardiness of more then 1000 apple varieties and 100 apple clonal rootstocks was studied.
The estimations of low temperature damage show that the highest winter hardiness is found in varieties selected in the Baltic States and other northern countries.
In periods when snow is absent, the frost can sometimes damage the roots of sensitive rootstocks (M.9 and MM.106). More resistant are the rootstocks selected in Russia and other northern countries.
