Abstract:
A Warning Service for pests and diseases of the most important fruit orchards was set up in the Emilia-Romagna region of Italy in 1997. Integration of information obtained by forecasting models, field surveys, volumetric spore traps and pheromone traps are used to develop warnings concerning the risk of pest/disease attack and the right time to spray.
This Warning Service provides warnings about apple scab, pear brown spot, grape downy mildew, apple and pear leafrollers (Pandemis cerasana and Argyrotaenia pulchellana), Lobesia botrana, Cydia funebrana, Cydia molesta and Cydia pomonella. The service proved to be an effective tool to: a) reduce the number of chemical sprays; b) determine the right timing for chemical application in relation to the real risk of disease outbreak or the most susceptible stage of the pest; c) succesfully integrate the I.P.Guidelines.
Further improvements will be achieved once the Regional Information System using GIS technology is fully operative.
