GLOBALISATION PROCESS AND ADAPTATION OF FRESH PRODUCE COMMODITY SYSTEMS: THE CASE OF COMPAGNIE FRUITIERE

Author:   J.-C. Montigaud
Keywords:   globalisation, maritime logistics, strategic and financial management, bananas and apples, commodity systems, industrial organisation
Abstract:
The goal of this communication is to present the process of globalization through the case of Cie Fruiterer, a group which originally only imported products to Europe but whose activities, now integrated, are located on three continents. For this, we have used three different tools: systems approach, industrial analysis and management methods (cost accounting, partnership theories, etc.). The main results concern a better understanding of an agro-food company faced with the globalization process: presence of a three level architecture leading to matrix management; vertical integration including production (bananas and pineapples), the goal being to lower costs especially through maritime shipping; setting up of vertical and horizontal alliances; use of financial tools (derivative instruments) on the international level.
