Abstract:
Wide variability was observed in tree characters, yield potentiality, fruit shape, size and quality of fruit in jackfruit.
Survey for identifying and collection of superior genotypes in jackfruit was initiated in 1990 and over a seven years period nearly 1800 trees were studied in eastern India.
The individual fruit weight varies between 2.10–10.22kg.
The trees showed the yield potentiality from 16 to 325 fruits per tree per year.
Some identified types (TSS more than 25 0Brix and total sugar more than 20 per cent) were found suitable to use as table fruit while others were found to bear thrice a year and are suitable to use as vegetable.
Types 5 and 15 have very high juice content, suitable for processing and Type 6,20 and 28 were extremely drought tolerent.
The different selected genotypes were vegetatively propagated and conserved in the Research Station for further evaluation and utilisation.
