Abstract:
Guangxi is very rich in wild vegetable resources with a large number of species, totally 170 species from 64 families which take up respectively 2.03 % and 22.22 % of the total species and family number of the plants.
They are widely distributed: 85 species from 49 families in the whole region of Guangxi, 12 species from 8 families in southern Guangxi, 5 species from 2 families distributed in western Guangxi and 68 species from 24 families distributed in northern Guangxi.
Among the 170 species, 36 species are woody plants, 127 species are herbs, and 7 species are vines.
The edible parts of wild vegetables determine their harvesting period.
The edible parts of 84.12 % of the wild vegetables are whole plants, stems, leaves and flowers; they are generally harvested in spring and summer.
The edible parts of 15.88 % of the wild vegetables are fruits, seeds and roots; they are harvested in autumn and winter.
The nutritional value of wild vegetables varies a lot.
A lot of species are better than cultivated vegetables in their high nutritional value.
Some species have a special nutritional composition or medicinal value.
Therefore, wild vegetables have very good prospects in food usage, feed usage and industry, etc.
The history of wild vegetables is very old in Guangxi, but there are still a lot of problems requiring research and exploitation.
The rich resource has not been exploited and protected rationally.
In order to exploite and protect the resource rationally and to create the best economic, social and ecological effects, it is necessary to carry out a comprehensive investigation of wild vegetable resources and research on propagation, introduction, cultivation and exploitation of vegetables.
