MORPHOLOGICAL, DEVELOPMENTAL AND CHEMICAL VARIABILITY OF HYPERICUM GENUS

Authors:   E. Osinska, Z. Weglarz
Keywords:   Hypericum L, chemical, developmental, morphologial, variability
Abstract:
The genus Hypericum comprises about 200 species. The most known and commonly used as medicinal plant is Hypericum perforatum L. Because of big demands on herb in Poland, several years ago this plant was taken into cultivation. From the biological and agricultural point of view same other species seem to be interesting too.

The aim of this study was a preliminary evaluation of morphological, developmental and chemical variability of 11 species of Hypericum. As a standard was used Polish cultivar of Hypericum perforatum L. - Topaz.

The result obtained showed distinct differences in following parameters: habit of plants, mass of raw material, content of flavonoids and hypericin. Yield of dry herb varied from 10 to 100g/plant, content of hypericin from 0,035 to 0, 183 %, and content of flavonoids from 1,03 to 1,82%.

The presented results suggest that such species as H. elegans Willdenow, H. maculatum Crantz, can be taken into consideration as a medicinal raw material.
