Abstract:
White flesh nectarines have not met with much interest or diffusion in Italy et probably due to the fact that the known cultivars have been few and with low commercial value.
However in the last 16 years, 79 new cultivars, most of them patented, have been released.
During genetic improvement it has been possible to increase pomological characters of white nectarines, above all with regard to flavour and flesh firmness.
Our crossing program, started in 1986 at the Department of Horticulture at the University of Florence, has had as its aim the working out of problems in both Italian and foreign cultivars.
For this purpose, intraspecific crossings have been realized using yellow nectarines "California" and "Maria Aurelia", as female parents, pollinated with the white nectarine "Snow Queen". From 1,000 observed seedlings, 33 selections were first isolated, then after five years of production they became nine, all with similar agronomic and pomological characteristics and covering a ripening period from precocious to late: "DOFI-86.395.006" (-25 dd. "Redhaven"), "DOFI-87.404.243" (-14), "DOFI-87.404.593" (-10), "DOFI-87.404.622" (-6), "DOFI-86.395.095" (+6), "DOFI-86.395.091" (+18), "DOFI-86.395.104" (+33), "DOFI-87.404.284" (+44) and "DOFI-87.404.091" (+49). The trees, of standard vigour, consistently produce large quantities of round-shape large-size fruits with brilliant red colour, having firm flesh and good flavour.
Therefore, like the best yellow flesh peaches and nectarines, they can be cultivated, harvested and commercialised with modern technologies.
