Abstract:
Yields and disease tolerance data on Asparagus officinalis L. cultivars has been collated from the participants of the 2nd International Asparagus Cultivar Trial.
A uniform experimental protocol is being used in 27 trials in 19 countries so that data on each cultivar can be compared between sites.
Generally, yield rankings, by site, have shown that cultivars developed in given climatic zone tend to perform well in similar climatic zones.
The cultivars that are true hybrids have a very narrow range of adaptation when compared to the clonal hybrid cultivars.
The data on disease tolerance indicates that there are at least three races of Puccinia asparagi in the world.
Cultivars tend to lack tolerance to pathogens that are not endemic to the area from which the cultivar was developed because of the lack of selection pressure.
