PLUM CULTIVARS AND HYBRIDS RESISTANT TO SHARKA

Authors:   M. Rankovic, D. Ogašanovic
Keywords:   sharka virus, hybridization, resistant plum hybrids
Abstract:
The paper presents the results of the work on breeding plum cultivars and hybrids resistant to plum pox (sharka) virus. The sharka problem has been solved worldwide by developing resistant cultivars using the method of hybridization and transgenic plants obtained by the method of genetic engineering and molecular biology. In the current work, using Scoldus No. 1 and Zh'lta Butilkovidna as the sources of resistance to sharka, resistant hybrids have been developed by the method of hybridization. As a result, resistant hybrids, grown along with infected hybrids and cultivars in the field, have been obtained. They failed to be infected with sharka even after 17 years in the conditions of repeated artificilal inoculations. The major characteristics of the resistant hybrids G-8, G-12, G-18 and H-27 are described in the present paper.
