SWEET CHERRY (Prunus avium L.) SELECTION STUDIES IN THE MIDDLE TAURUS MOUNTAINS

Author:   A. Küden
Abstract:
In the first stage of the experiment during 1982-1995, 14 local and 21 foreign, totally 35 sweet cherry varieties were investigated for their flowering periods, yield and quality characteristics. Among them ‘Larian’ (8.31 g), ‘0900 Ziraat’ (8.02 g), and ‘Corum’ (7.89 g) gave the best results.

In the second stage of the experiment, local sweet cherry selection studies were performed during 1994–1996 to find out the potential of the area. Five red and two yellow sweet cherry accessions were identified. The red accessions were called as ‘Toros 1’, ‘Toros 2’, ‘Toros 3’, ‘Toros 4’, and ‘Toros 5’. The yellow ones were called as ‘Sari 1’ and ‘Sari 2’.

Fruit characteristics of the selected sweet cherry types were determined by pomological analysis. Among them, ‘Toros 3’ (9.75 g) gave the biggest sized fruits and followed by ‘Ömerli’ (9.38 g) and ‘Toros 1’ (8.06 g). ‘Toros 4’ showed a compact type of growing besides a good yield and fruit size.
