| Abstract:
This volume of Acta Horticulturae is Part 12 of the Proceedings of the XXV International Horticultural Congress. Invited and keynote speakers and selected authors of offered oral papers and posters had the opportunity to submit their manuscripts for publication in this volume of the series Acta Horticulturae. Submitted manuscripts were reviewed by at least two members of the Editorial Board and amended according to the referee suggestions prior to acceptance. The Editorial Board could not accept all manuscripts submitted for publication. The ISHS acknowledges the cooperation received from the Editors and Editorial Board on reviewing the manuscripts which was a significant contribution to the overall quality of the publication. Breeding or creating new varities is an amazing activity, especially when it concerns new fruits and ornamentals. Creating new varieties better adapted to the wishes of mankind is a worldwide activity as illustrated in the presented papers. The papers selected in the subthene are dealing with higher yield and better quality, disease and stress resistance, adaption for mechanisation and processing, incresing diversity and breeding techniques. Breeding is needed for major and minor crops, for worldwide and small niche crops.
However, also breeding investments for smaller crops are not to be neglected.
Therefore research in universities and research centres are needed.
The results of this research effort, as presented at the 'Breeding'-session of the Brussels congress in 1998 is included in this volume of Acta Horticulture. | |
