Abstract:
Currently F1 hybrids are commonly used to produce chicory (Cichorium intybus L. var. foliosum) in hydroponic forcing.
However, a reliable method for cultivar identification in chicory is necessary on the seed and root level (protection of the chicory grower) as well as on the head tissue (protection for consumer and export). The cultivars can not be distinguished from each other using morphological characteristics.
For that reason, genetic polymorphism's, generated by the use of RAPD markers, were tested in their efficiency for cultivar identification.
RAPD analysis was performed on 23 commercial F1 hybrids.
Several decamer primers (OPERON) were tested of which 15 generated polymorphism's.
Based on these primers, it is now possible to separate the 23 cultivars.
It was concluded that RAPD is a valuable technique for cultivar identification in chicory especially for positive identification.
