ISHS Acta Horticulturae 52: II Symposium on Timing of the Fieldproduction of Vegetable Crops

TOMATO AND PEPPER TIMING AND ATTACKS OF SOME OF THEIR DISEASES

Authors:   Z. Aleksic, D. Aleksic
Abstract:
Indirect control measures against vegetable diseases, particularly for species with several successive fruit harvests, are of exceptional importance. The risk of damage of supplied fungicides very often does not allow their application in spite of the need for the treatment of plants. Therefore and for a range of other advantages, in tomato and pepper growing the cultural protection practices which exclude or reduce the use of pesticides are more and more appreciated. Rotation, development of resistent varieties, organization of the production in regions where the conditions for invasion of diseases are non-existing, became important protective measures of these cultures. Besides, the virus diseases can not be controlled by other methods for the time being.

Observations made in one locality of continental area of our country (Smed.Palanka, Serbia) show for instance with tomato late blight and pepper stolbur, that there is no conformity of conditions for the development of these diseases and no conditions related to different timing of tomato and pepper fruits for harvest. This indicates that the timing has to be studied as one of the methods of indirect disease control in vegetable.
