A STUDY WITH GROWTH REGULATORS FOR CHEMICAL STOPPING OF BRUSSELS SPROUTS

Abstract:
Reducing apical dominance in Brussels sprouts by chemical means increased crop yield by up to 53% while removal of the apical bud by hand increased yield by 67%. In experiments in Northern Ireland the greatest effect was achieved when removal of apical dominance coincided with attainment of maximum plant height.

The chemical growth regulators PP 413 and TIBA showed promise for stopping Brussels sprouts and it was shown that their effects were enhanced by the use of the surfactants S600 or a non-ionic wetter which minimised run off from Brussels sprout leaves. Only TIBA appeared effective when applied directly to the apical region of plants while other chemicals seemed more active as soil drenches or when applied overhead to the uppermost leaves.

Chemical stopping agents applied to 15 Brussels sprout varieties produced a variable yield response.
