NATURAL CONDITIONS FOR GROWING OF VEGETABLES IN YUGOSLAVIA |

| Abstract:
About 2/3 of the territory of Yugoslavia represents mountainous massives where the ecologic conditions are not favourable, especially not for commercial production of vegetables. The remainder of about 1/3 of the territory of Yugoslavia is represented by lower and more even grounds which are usually more favourable for organization of commercial growing of vegetable crops. In view of the greographic - topographic conditions, in Yugoslavia there is a contrast of 3 different climates which are more or less favourable for growing of vegetable crops. On the basis of the ecologic conditions, the territory of Yugoslavia can be divided into 3 main regions. These are the Continental, the Mediterranean and the Mountainous regions. For commercial growing of vegetable crops only the Continental and the Mediterranean regions are of importance. About 80% of the commercial growing of vegetable crops in Yugoslavia is concentrated on the Continental region. In future this region will continue to play the leading role for the commercial production of vegetable crops. In view of the fact that the winters are colder and longer, the growing of vegetable crops under glass is less developed, and it is more expensive, while the vegetation season is shorter than on the Mediterranean region. However, there are possibilities for timing of the outdoor production of the vegetable crops. The remainder of about 20% of the commercial production of vegetables is concentrated on the Mediterranean region. Thanks to the shorter and more temperate winters than on the Continental region, the growing of vegetable crops under glass is easier and cheaper here. A great number of cold-resistant vegetables can be grown continuously all year round or almost all year round outdoors. Despite the favourable ecologic conditions and the constant increase of the production of vegetable crops, only about 636 000 ha are utilized for the production of vegetable crops in Yugoslavia, and the yield generally amounts to about 5 000 000 tons. However, the potential possibilities provided by the ecologic conditions are indicative of good prospects for a manifold increase of the production, so that Yugoslavia may become one of the leading European countries in the production of vegetable crops, especially in the winter periods. | |
