EQUIVALENCE OF THE TEMPERATURE INTEGRAL AND THE CARBON DYNAMICS CONCEPTS IN PLANTS: UTILITY FOR CONTROL

Abstract:
The temperature integral concept has been recently used by several authors to define optimal greenhouse climate controllers. To give some insight in this concept, a carbon balance model of tomato plants is analysed. A formal equivalence between the dynamics of carbohydrate accumulation and temperature integral is derived. This equivalence only holds true when the growth conditions are optimal according to the model. It is shown that in this case, the temperature integral must lie in a strip whose evolution is driven by the photosynthesis and whose width only depends on the plant state. Thus, the optimal temperature depends on the environmental conditions and the resulting plant activity while the tolerance around the optimal that the plant can withstand is independent of these conditions.
